About Photos By Design...
Dana Lunden began his photography career in 1973, when he attended Plymouth State College, in New Hampshire. Working as a Staff Photographer for the college newspaper, he learned the craft of photography and photojournalism. He gained experience in the darkroom, printing black and white photographs and later moved into color printing.
Through the next few years Dana traveled throughout New England, photographing scenic areas and architecture, before moving into "people" photography. "Friends would find out I had a camera and asked me if I would photograph their weddings." Thus, another area of experience began to develop. "I found out that there's more to creating an image than pointing the camera and pressing the shutter button. When you analyze the word photography, it means recording with light. I began to study photographs of people in magazines and looked at images created by icons like Ansel Adams and one thing popped out: images can either be "flat" or they can have depth. To have depth, they need to have highlights, midtones and shadows. It's all about lighting." So he studied lighting.
Dana moved to Florida, continuted his wedding and portrait business and then heard about a group of photographers who were talking about forming a new guild; he went to a meeting and became a Charter Member of the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association, or TAPPA ( www.tappa.org ) Shortly after that, he joined the Florida Professional Photographers, Inc. (www.fpponline.org) and the Southeastern Professional Photographers, Inc. and attended seminars and classes on lighting, posing, marketing and business. He served as President of TAPPA in 2002 and continued serving on various committees for the FPP. He received the Florida Service Award from the Florida Professional Photographers at the Annual Convention and Trade Show in Orlando, Florida, in August, 2004.
Digital imaging hit the professional photography profession and soon afterwards. Dana transitioned to a 100 percent digital photography business. "Now, my darkroom is in my computer. We can do things today that weren't possible just a few short years ago."
